Live long and prosper in Switzerland

The country of individualism and responsibility

Would you like to have a better life?

Does “live long and prosper” sound good to you?

Then moving to Switzerland may be the solution for you!

Before we start talking about why Switzerland can be the most awesome country for you, we would like to outline our motivation for writing this article:

Today’s life is a lot about following rules, filing paperwork and working for others like the government. In countries like the United States, Germany or France, you end up working more than half the year for your government because they collect so much of your income from you in the form of taxes. Sometimes these taxes are hidden in the form of indirect taxes on consumption, such as alcohol or gasoline taxes which are not so transparent to you. Other times, they are hidden in the social security system where often more money goes to your parents and grandparents generations that you will ever get back once you retire. This article is not about how you can completely “leave the system” though. We want to help you in a much more pragmatic way that applies to many people and not just to a few radicals.

We see two important ingredients towards improving your life: Changing your country and outsourcing all the boring paperwork.

Now Switzerland is of course not completely free from all the negative things mentioned above. But in the “Confoederatio Helvetica” you can simply have less of the bad stuff and more of the good stuff!

Switzerland has many awesome things to offer, such as:

  • Friendly and polite people
  • Excellent food from different cuisines
  • A high tech industry with many well paying jobs
  • A multilingual environment with 4 official languages
  • World-class education
  • Low to moderate taxes at the same time as a reasonable social system
  • One of the highest life expectancies in the world
  • Very high safety and low crime rate

This is why we believe that Switzerland is one of the best countries in the world to move to for many people who want to lead a better life.

And the best part is that you may not even have to do that much to benefit from more money and a longer life. At 38Countries, we want to help you avoid annoying pitfalls and instead to be on the fast lane to your new country. And we want you to pick the right country, because certainly one country can not the best solution for everyone - or “one size (does not) fit all”. So while we believe strongly in the benefits of Switzerland, we won't recommend it to everyone.

Switzerland is a particularly good choice if you:

  • Work in technology or another highly paid profession and want to make more money in the same job, e.g. to save for a house in another country
  • Like an international and open, but safe and reasonably regulated place to live and work
  • Value reliability and sophistication
  • Want to learn new languages: Switzerland has a German, French and Italian speaking part as well as a few villages that speak a minority language called Rumantsch. Further English, is becoming more and more important in the big expat hubs around Zürich, Basel, Genf and Zug

If you are from Germany, Austria, France, Italy, Belgium, the Netherlands, Luxembourg or any other country where German, French, Italian or something close is spoken you will have a particularly easy transition to Switzerland. You only have to move yourself and adapt to a slightly different culture while the language stays the same and you can often earn much more money in the same job!

Moving to Switzerland also means that you would want to find a new apartment to live, deal with some paper, sign up for insurances and open a bank account. We can help you with all of these things, especially if you are not super familiar with Switzerland yet.
