The Best Mobile Data Roaming and Gigabit Internet Providers in Switzerland (2025)

Raphael Haase • December 26, 2024

When it comes to staying connected in Switzerland—whether through mobile data while traveling abroad or high-speed internet services in major cities—knowing the most affordable and reliable options is key. Here’s a breakdown of the best roaming plans and gigabit fixed landline internet providers for Swiss residents, with a focus on Zurich, Zug, Basel, Bern, Luzern, and Geneva.

You can save a lot of money on telecommunication in Switzerland by choosing the right brands (it's the same towers and cables anyways).

Save money with the discount brands

If you go with the mainstream brands like Swisscom and Sunrise you can of course get the best service level. But the same companies have their own discount brands called Wingo, Lebara/Yallo. And then there are a few more third-party brands e.g. from Migros who will also sell you mobile phone plans from the same companies.

Mobile phone plans in general

Swisscom and Sunrise are the main two reputable mobile phone networks.

I would stay away from Salt. They are known for roaming rip-offs (e.g. randomly increasing the monthly price protection limits etc.). They also have the weakest network out of all 3 providers in Switzerland.

If you go for the main stream brands, you can get all perks like connecting your Apple Watch to the network, you get some Apple Music for free and so on. But it's hardly worth the extra charge. Regarding Apple Watches, it's not really attractive to connect your watch to the network anyways since the Watch so far supports no roaming so outside of Switzerland it will only connect through WiFi.

If you want "the best mobile phone plan in Switzerland", here is one example: Lebara XXL.

In December 2024 the price was about 40 CHF p.m.

Last time I checked, you got free roaming in EEA + US/CA with 40 GB data and a lot of free voice roaming as well (do check the details, sometimes there are surprises e.g. when calling the US from CH it's cheap, but from the EU it's expensive all of a sudden).

Cheapest Mobile Data Roaming Plans with Swiss Numbers

Traveling abroad does not mean breaking the bank over mobile data charges, unless you are choosing the wrong plan. These Swiss providers offer some of the most affordable roaming plans for users who need data on the go in the EU and USA / Canada.

1. Lebara and Yallo (Sunrise Brands)

Lebara and Yallo are your go-to budget options for international data roaming. Both brands belong to Sunrise and are known for offering affordable deals without compromising on coverage. Perfect for users who want to save money while traveling to the EU or USA / Canada.

2. Swisscom’s “inOne Mobile Go” Plan

Swisscom, the largest telecom provider in Switzerland, offers the "inOne Mobile Go" plan with surprisingly affordable data roaming options. This plan provides ample data for EU and USA usage with competitive roaming costs, making it a standout choice for heavy data users.

3. Salt’s “Europe & USA Plus” Add-On

Salt’s "Europe & USA Plus" roaming package is another budget-conscious option. Known for its simplicity and flexibility, this add-on allows users to enjoy cost-effective data usage while traveling through Europe and the USA.

4. Sunrise’s “Europe & USA” Package

Sunrise, a trusted name in Swiss telecommunications, offers the "Europe & USA" plan, a competitive package with excellent roaming rates. Ideal for those who need reliable international connectivity in the EU and the USA.

5. M-Budget Mobile’s “EU & USA” Option

Run by Migros, M-Budget Mobile combines cost-efficiency with reliability. Their "EU & USA" roaming package is perfect for budget-conscious users who want affordable yet dependable roaming options when traveling.

Recommendations for Travelers

If affordable plans are your priority and you’re a frequent flyer within the EU or USA, we recommend starting with Lebara, or Yallo or M-Budget Mobile brands. Their no-frills, affordable roaming plans offer substantial savings compared to the major providers.

Swiss Gigabit Internet Providers in Big Cities

As developed as Switzerland is, not every square meter of Switzerland has fast fiber optics yet. But they have been expanding it a lot in recent years. So many villages and all major cities in Switzerland offer fiber optics internet, often with fiber to the home and supporting a gigabit per second symmetric  or even more.

Independent of the brand / "provider", the cables and actual service is often the same.

1. iWay

iWay specializes in offering competitive, high-quality fiber-optic gigabit internet services in Switzerland. Based in Zurich, the company extends its reach to other major cities and offers tailored packages for small businesses and families.

2. Lebara and Yallo

Both Lebara and Yallo provide reliable and affordable gigabit-speed internet services using Sunrise's and sometimes Swisscom's infrastructure at more affordable rates. Focused particularly on budget-conscious users, their plans cover major cities like Basel, Bern, and Geneva, making high-speed internet more accessible than ever.

3. Swisscom

Swisscom is known as Switzerland’s leading telecommunications provider. With a vast fiber-optic network and gigabit-speed internet, Swisscom is available in major urban centers like Zurich, Basel, Bern, and Geneva. Offering unlimited data and exceptional reliability, their plans cater to both personal and business users. Be aware that you can get almost the same level of service at lower prices through the discount brands (see above).

4. Sunrise

Offering gigabit connections in cities such as Luzern, Zug, and Basel, Sunrise stands out for its high-speed, fiber-optic-based internet and excellent customer service. It’s a solid choice for households requiring consistent performance and affordable pricing. Be aware that you can get almost the same level of service at lower prices through the discount brands (see above).

5. Salt’s “Fiber Box”

Salt’s "Fiber Box" delivers lightning-fast gigabit speeds by leveraging its fiber-optic network. Popular for its competitive pricing, Salt’s internet services are widely available in cities like Zurich, Geneva, and Bern.

6. EWZ Zurich Fiber Network (EWZ ZüriNet)

For Zurich residents, EWZ’s ZüriNet fiber-optic network offers some of the fastest internet plans at an affordable price. With transparent pricing and a range of providers to choose from, EWZ is a standout option for gigabit connections in the Zurich area. Explore more on EWZ ZüriNet.
