5 Reasons to Spend a Month in Sibiu

Romania meets Germany

Describing Sibiu is hard. It is hard, because it is difficult to put in words how awesome this town is.
Imagine a pretty, small-but-not-too-small town from the German-Austrian-Hungarian world. Feel the breeze coming from the mountains on your face, inhale the fresh and clean air, watch the carefree families walking on the main square and enjoy its cleanliness and order.

Now, take this beautiful town and place it just a few hundreds of kilometres south, in Romania, and make it much, much cheaper. Sounds good already, doesn't it?

The Prices Will Set You Free

If you want to reduce your costs, if you are starting as a freelancer or even if you want to start a company but your budget is limited, Sibiu is perfect for you.

Let's say you need to do some bootstrapping because you just quit a boring corporate job and now you need to build your client base. You can get a two-room apartment through Airbnb for about 50 euros a night in the heart of the city and buy groceries and yummy bakeries for very reasonable prices. Rely then on the fast internet to make your way through the ocean of self-employment.

Or are you maybe looking to start a business but your budget does not allow you to hire people in Western Europe or North America in the beginning?

Well, in Romania you might be able to get fine workforce for half the price. Besides, Romania has incentives for those who want to open companies and hire local people. Why not in a beautiful place like Sibiu?

So easy to reach, you might not believe it

But what about the logistics? Will I be able to visit my clients? The answer is yes: despite the size and position, Sibiu has a small but well-kept airport from which you can easily reach several European capitals and main cities. If you wish to visit the rest of Romania, there are buses and trains that might not be the fast trains of Italy or France, but at least they are very cheap. There are also some taxi services that might take you from one city to another, but in Romania everyone drives like crazy and taxi drivers have a passion for playing around with their smartphones while driving.

Save Yourself a Cultural Shock

You might be an adventurous person, and this is always a good thing. But if you are reading this, you are probably not planning to spend a sabbatical backpack year in South America. You want to focus on your work, build something. This means, you cannot afford to fly to a country where you can be pickpocketed or where you might eat such spicy food that might turn your mouth red and you can say goodbye to video-calls for a few days. You need a place where you can feel safe and not have too many surprises. Romania is one of those places, and Sibiu is its work of art.

Everything you need, you got it

If you are reading this, you are probably an open-minded person, a traveller, or one that likes variety in their life. If you wonder: will Sibiu be able to offer me enough things to do in my free time or will I get bored? The answer is, once more, yes. Although not big, Sibiu has parks, great museums, lots of places to play billiard and bowling, and restaurants offer everything from Asian to Hungarian cuisine. A four-course dinner with a few glasses of wine in a very nice and cozy environment might cost you about 80 euros for two people.

Looking for an alternative? Take a look at Braşov!

Let us take the chance to mention another small-but-not-too-small, great town in Romania: Braşov. It is quite similar to Sibiu but the mountains surrounding it make it a little more chilly in winter and give it a unique flair. Braşov would be just as recommendable as Sibiu if it wasn’t for the lack of an airport. Or to be more exact, there is one, but it has not been completed. Locals hope it will open soon, and so do several companies that see the potential, but do not want their people to have to travel through Bucharest followed by a two-hour train ride.
