Athens is often associated with old ruins or a country that has been in the news less favourably in the last decade.
The modern Athens can be a really great location to work remotely for a couple of days though. You can fly there quickly from many European airports in about 3 hours or less and combine focused work during the day with great food at decent prices in the evenings or at the weekend.
Especially in the spring and fall, it can be a great getaway for a couple of days, enhancing both your focus and your health.
The Greek approach to life is probably a bit more relaxed than what you are used to, especially if you are from Central or Northern Europe or the US. While this is maybe not the best foundation if you want to build the next hotshot startup, it can be great for a week for you.
Imagine this: You start your work early in the morning. Due to the time zone you can finally be an "early bird" without getting up too early (assuming your team is mostly located west of Athens).
After a couple of hours, you take a break with a delicious lunch.
Next up, you try yet another new thing: Greek coffee, also known as "Turkish coffee". It is like leaving some of the ground coffee powder still in there, at least from an ignorant's perspective. The Greek way of making coffee preserves more of the natural nutrients that the coffee has. A side effect is that the coffee is more "grainy", it is as if you put the coffee powder in hot water like you would with a French press, without eventually removing the coffee itself in the end.
Athens has many options where you can stay. From affordable apartments on AirBnB in the center to top hotels like the Grand Bretagne next to Syntagma square, there are many options, depending on your budget. If you go for an apartment, the areas around the Acropolis are a good starting point. Not only are they relatively central and well-reachable, they also have many great restaurants around them.
Many apartments in central Athens do not have a super reliable WiFi connection for all sorts of reasons. It starts with trivial lack of care by however is maintaining the apartment and ends with limitations in speed because it seems that some parts of Athens are not covered by fiber optics, putting a physical maximum on your speed. In the age of video calls and cloud backups, better ask your host before going there or read the reviews very carefully about what the others wrote about the connection speed.
When we were there, we were not so lucky with the apartment WiFi, so we ended up trying one of the Spaces coworking spaces in Athens.
The large area around the Acropolis has so many great restaurants. From inexpensive (around 40 EUR for a dinner for two with wine) up to luxury dinners with an amazing view and atmosphere (up to 200 EUR for two persons), you will find everything in Athens.
And finally: Don't forget to see all the ancient buildings and ruins :-)
Pretty much everything around the Acropolis is worth seeing and of course the Acropolis itself.
