5 Reasons to Spend a Month in Riga

Soviet Feeling in the EU

Riga is an interesting city in the Baltics. The three Baltic states Estonia, Latvia and Lithuania have been part of the EU for almost 20 years now. And while Tallinn and Vilnius feel more “European” to me, Riga seems to have kept a bit more of the Soviet feeling.

Due to the current military situation, it may be hard for you to visit Moscow.

But the cool thing is, you don't need to.

It is much easier and safer to visit Riga instead!

Riga still has a distinct Soviet feeling, especially regarding its architecture.

But not only: Riga also has many German and Scandinavian influences, making it a perfect city to spend some time there if those cultures and styles suit you.

Close by: Jurmala, the Soviet beach

Only a half hour by train is Jurmala, a beach town that was a favorite of many of the Soviet elites. In summer it can get quite warm there, making it an ideal beach location if you don’t want to go to all the well-known classics in Southern Europe. Or if you just want to see where the Soviets often vacationed.

It had a certain fascination to me: It's a decent and well maintained beach, the surrounding wood area reminded me a bit of California while there are also some abandoned buildings there from the Soviet era.

And if that does not interest you, it's just a great getaway from Riga anytime during the summer.

An inexpensive modern European city

Another important feature for nomads is the price ratio. Riga allows you to stay in really nice 4 star hotels for about 90 EUR per night in the high season at the moment and even less you stay in an apartment for a full month or come outside of the high season.

Easy to reach

With AirBaltic being headquartered in Latvia, there are many flight connections through that airport. So it is relatively easy to fly there directly from many big airports in the world, easier than to the other two baltic capitals Tallinn and Vilnius. You often have to stop over in Riga when going there from other parts of the world.

Lots to see and do in your free time

Many activities are possible in Riga in your free time: There are tons of museums to visit, like the really beautiful House of the Black Heads or the Occupation museum.

The Opera is in full session again after pandemic and has many classic shows. Most don't require knowledge of any Latvian.

The parks are just great for talking a walk, having a picknick or enjoying the sun.

And you can take a boat ride on the river!
