I recently visited Krakow in Poland and I think it is a great place for software developers and digital nomads to spend a week, a month or maybe even a year.
Formerly it was on the outskirts of the Austro-Hungarian empire and you can still feel the influence a bit while at the same time the genuine Polish origins were never lost. Many people seem to speak or at least understand German and you can see the historic traces of the various German-speaking regimes everywhere, for good and for bad.
One of the most important features about Krakow is that it is just beautiful. Walking along the river Vistula in summer is really enjoyable and not far from most of center of the city.
And Krakow has quite some pretty squares and buildings to look at as well.
There is a big central market place that is still open today, selling all sorts of goods like textiles and jewelry. The so called Rynek Główny follows a Baroque architecture like the buildings in the area and is right next to the St Mary Basilica.
The Basilica is well known for its trumpeter that comes out every hour.
Most of Poland nowadays is by no means cheap due to the many years of positive economic development and stronger integration into the European economy. But compared with the big cities in other countries like the US, Canada, UK, France or Switzerland, Krakow is still much more affordable for the broke digital entrepreneur or nomad. This can be particularly interesting if you are only starting out with your journey and need to protect your “runway”.
Krakow has the right size in my opinion. It is neither very big, bit it’s also not a small village.
You have plenty of options of public transportation available, in particular the small scooters from Lime, Bolt and Tier and sometimes even bicycles. On top of that, taxis via Uber or FreeNow are really affordable (at least from an expat perspective).
And if you want to just use your feet, that is often quite doable as well. You can basically walk across the whole central part of Krakow within an hour, which depending on the weather can be very nice.
Krakow has many coworking spaces available, both from bigger brands like Regus/Spaces as well as smaller ones that you can find through websites like Coworker.com or Google Maps. Or you can hang out with these two famous people on a park bench.
Krakow has so many things to do in the evening or on the weekend:
